When conceiving a lamp for the drawing table, Michele De Lucchi presented Ernesto Gismondi, founder of Artemide, with a sketch of a moving arm lamp, later named Tolomeo. The name pays homage to the astronomer and mathematician Ptolemy, symbol of a scientific mentality. This lamp, characterized by a spring system hidden inside the lamp body and by a thin cable that keeps it tensioned, is inspired by the systems used by trebuchet fishermen, which allow the position of the net to be maneuvered upwards or downward. Even the head of the lamp, shaped like an inverted cone, can be adjusted to direct the light flow as desired.
The result of an idea of "frugal technology" and with a simple but revolutionary design developed by Giancarlo Fassina, the Tolomeo has become an icon of Italian design, winning the prestigious Compasso d'Oro award in 1989. Made of polished aluminium, it is available in wall, floor and suspension versions, in various sizes and finishes.
The model described is the smallest of the countertop family, available in seven colours. This classic model is equipped with an E14 bulb socket and includes an LED bulb.
